The Neuro-Psychiatric Unit at Parthenon Pavilion
The Neuro-Psychiatric Unit provides short-term treatment to individuals with psychiatric symptoms associated with a neurological disorder, such as Parkinsons Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and stroke.
Scope of Services
- Interdisciplinary patient assessment and individualized treatment planning
- Medication management by Psychiatry, Neurology, and Internal Medicine
- Medical assessment with treatment of medical issues as necessary
- Neuropsychological Testing as necessary
- Nutritional Counseling
- Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)
- Care and management of activities of daily living
- Discharge planning and community resource referral
- Family and caregiver consultation and education
- Daily groups and activities
Community Meeting
Community meeting is a daily intervention utilized to orient patients to dates and unit milieu as well as develop daily treatment goals. Staff will assist those unable to establish daily goals. This group allows staff to observe reality orientation and awareness.
Process Group
Process Group is utilized to stimulate and challenge current level of functioning. Healthy interaction between peers and exploration of positive coping skills is also fostered. Staff will cue/prompt response and interaction as needed with the goal of spontaneous, appropriate verbalization and response to current intervention.
Art and Music Therapies
Art and Music Therapy groups emphasize the ability to express ones self, provide outlets for self-expression and stress, and increase social awareness, allows the patient to have and recall successful and rewarding life experiences.
Fitness
Patients are engaged in physical activities designed to promote muscle tone and maintain current level of functioning. Stretches designed to correspond with activities of daily living are incorporated into groups. Patients are encouraged to participate as able, and inclusion at every level of physical ability/disability is considered. Due to the needs of patients with Parkinsonian symptomatology, fitness is offered twice daily to promote optimal physical functioning and decrease rigidity.
Cognitive Stimulation
Interventions are utilized to stimulate and challenge current level of functioning. Health interaction between peers is also fostered. Staff will cue or prompt a response and interaction as needed with the goal of spontaneous, appropriate verbalization and response to current intervention.
Sensory Activities
Sensory Activities promote the use and development of functional sensory skills to increase reality orientation and self-awareness and surroundings. Visual and aural discrimination are employed to maintain positive function and integration of senses. Subjective and objective response to the intervention media is encouraged.
